Music Anarchy was inspired by a long-simmering brain storm: do not accept the division of persons into performers and audience and the further division of performers into bands. It feels like we are all one swarm forever being carved up in order to sell or be sold to. Let's be driven by the desire to perform. The usual logic is to be prudent in how often one performs so as to be able to draw an audience for each performance. However, if I had my way, I would ideally perform 5 days a week every week. I play a type of music that is not widely appreciated or enjoyed. Given the above, presenting music in a standard-concert-setting-location-etc did not seem ideal. A search for non-standard performance space resulted in our present location, the piano room of the Hennepin County Central Library and Music Anarchy has been meeting there twice a week since October 2013. Meetings last for one hour. Music Anarchy takes a cue from the Spontaneous Music Ensemble who were active in London during the 1960s and their month of 6-nights a week performances at the Little Theatre Club. During Music Anarchy, the assembled players set up quickly and all begin performing right away. Participants play together simultaneously and each session create a piece of music of roughly 45 or so minutes. The last ten minutes of the session is time for talking, introductions, etc. Participants are encouraged to bring an instrument, voice, or object with which to perform. Participants who bring electronic instruments are asked to use an amplifier of 1 watt or less (or be prepared to play at an equivalent volume). All styles and genres of music performance are welcomed. All Music Anarchy sessions are recorded and can be listened to here: http://4gre.org/musicanarchy.html The only rule is that someone must be playing the piano at all times.
